STP Octane Booster

STP Octane Booster has the name brand you know and trust. What makes this product even better than just having the name behind it, is that it will perform. The one downside to the STP brand of booster is that it comes in a 5.25oz bottle. They make up for this by providing consumers with a box of 12 in addition to the single bottle.

Cost - STP has the second highest price of any of our reviewed octane boosters. It ranked in at about $1.33 per gallon. At the time of review, a 5.25-ounce container was just under $7.

Performance - Users seemed to have some mixed thoughts regarding STP. Some reported a noticeable difference, while some only perceived a difference. This is a bit concerning, but when compared to the cost of jumping up in octane or even purchasing race fuel, STP comes out ahead.

Why It Made The List: When purchasing, you can often find it in large quantities and sometimes save a bit by buying more.

NOS Octane Booster

NOS Octane Booster gets an honorable mention in our book because it yielded fantastic results. The major drawback and we do mean major, is that this stuff costs a fortune. You are almost better off buying racing fuel for the cost. Yet, if you are willing to pay a premium, it will provide excellent performance.

Cost - NOS came in dead last on our price scale at a whopping $5.28 per gallon. A 12oz bottle will set you back just over $63.

Performance - It is incredible! Some users say using it is almost as good as using racing gas. We were blown away by the user reviews and performance results NOS returned. You also have the name brand behind a great product. Now if only it were a tad less expensive, but like we mentioned -- when it comes to performance, price can be secondary.

Why It Made The List: Despite its high price-tag, it works exceptionally well, and you won't be disappointed.

Octane Booster: It can really make a difference in your engine

Octane booster is a common term in the automotive industry, especially when looking at increasing the performance of an engine.

As people look at increasing their car's performance, they often end up in the category of fuel additives, fuel cleaners, and boosters. You may have questions such as; how does octane booster work? Or even more straightforward; does it work? To know for sure, you must understand how octane does what it does.

Just like the human body performs better when on a proper diet and it has had the chance to clean and remove chemicals, your car's engine reacts the same way. It will perform better when cleaning, removing and preventing undesirables, like the build-up of chemicals known as “free radicals.” Octane booster can help to prevent and eliminate the free radicals and help to increase performance. While all products in this category claim to boost octane, some are better than others.

Understanding Octane Helps You Understand The Boosters

As we mentioned, understanding octane is key to understanding how octane boosters work. The performance of engine fuel is rated in octane numbers or octane rating. Octane with a higher number rating can withstand more compression before igniting. By contrast, the lower an octane number, the lower the compression required to ignite the fuel.

A significant component of the compression cycle is the oxidation of the hydrocarbons in the air-to-fuel mixture. Blah, blah, blah.. don’t worry, we won't bore you with too many details, but understand that the partial oxidation produces chemical species known as free radicals. When there are not too many free radicals, normal combustion will occur. If there are too many, watch out for engine “knock” or “ping.”

Engine knock occurs with the compression in the piston causes the fuel to self-ignite before the spark plug has had a chance to do its thing. Of course, as you would imagine, this is extremely undesirable and can do serious harm to your engine. That’s where the octane booster can help with performance by keeping the free radicals under control by either capturing them or preventing their formation altogether.

How we selected the products for our reviews

When it comes to comparing products, a lot of people place great emphasis and strongly weigh their decisions on price. We’ve found that people who are looking to increase the performance of their car place more focus on the performance of the product. Nonetheless, we examined both the price and performance of the top brands of octane booster to bring you our best picks.

Spoiler alert: the prices are all very comparable and competitive (with one exception).

When looking at the cost, it is important to remember that some products allow you to increase your octane more than others. Some manufacturers have higher thresholds and recommendations, and that is why we tried to set a common standard for measurement. In the end, we leaned toward boosting octane by 1 to give us a level playing field for cost analysis
